Olympic Controversy: During the second day of the Paris Olympics, an official was caught making hand gestures on camera in an odd occurrence in the La Concorde venue. Sunday, July 27, the Women’s Street Skateboarding finals took place.
Usually used as an emoji in messaging, the hand motion was a “OK’s sign”. With this gesture, the thumb and forefinger join while the three other fingers are stretched: 👌
For far-right thinkers, this specific hand gesture does, nevertheless, have underlying significance. Reports from The Telegraph state that the hand motion represents “white supremacy”. The American Anti-Defamation League had included the hand symbol on a 2019 hate gesture list.
According to Telegraph sources, the man in issue was observed flaunting the gesture twice—firstly in front of the camera while Australia’s Chloe Covell was on the course and secondly after the silver medalist Liz Akama’s performance.
Though he is not among the Olympic Broadcasting Team members, the unidentified individual is visible in the visuals wearing an OBS (Olympic Broadcasting Service) T-shirt. He only works with one of the team’s contractors.
In the instance, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has acted strictly, revoked the accreditation of the person accountable for the hand gesture. In a statement, one IOC official lately said:
“The person in question has been identified and confirmed not to be a member of the OBS team. They are associated with one of its contractors. The contractor has been informed, consequently, the individual’s accreditation has been cancelled effective immediately.”
British rugby player Amy Wilson-Hardy pulls out of the 2024 Olympics in Paris after racist comments get a lot of attention
Member of the Great Britain Women’s rugby sevens squad Amy Wilson-Hardy recently withdrew from the Paris Olympics because a racist comment she made over WhatsApp came under public notice.
Wilson-Hardy wrote in the WhatsApp chat ( removed after then) :
“Thought I’d have a better chance with the blacks.”
The 32-year-old hasn’t played in any more Great Britain games at the Paris Olympics. She also didn’t play in the games against China and Ireland. Since the letter became public, the British Olympic Association (BOA) has asked Amy Wilson-Hardy to thoroughly look into what she did.
Wilson-Hardy dropped out of the four-yearly event, and 24-year-old Abi Burton took her place on the team. Great Britain did not make it to the 15th place match in the Rugby Seven event at the 2024 Games.
