Lucas Glover, who has played in 520 PGA Tour events, made a rookie mistake on Thursday at the WM Phoenix Open. As a result, he had to drop out of the game. Glover missed the text message that was sent to players earlier in the week. It had his tee time with Nico Echavarria and Tom Hoge at 8:26 a.m. local time. He missed his group in Round 1 because of this.
Glover told Golf Channel, “I just misread my text messages that showed my tee time.” This was after the PGA Tour called him just minutes before he was supposed to tee off on the first hole in the morning wave at TPC Scottsdale. “I’m kicking myself but laughing at myself at the same time.”
This is his first pulled-out on the PGA Tour since 2013. It’s a bummer that Glover had to drop out of the game, but he can take comfort in the fact that he’s already in all the big events for 2024, like next week’s Genesis Invitational at Riviera Country Club. Many other golfers, including Ryo Hisatsune, who replaced him this week in Phoenix, are trying to play their way into those events. He’s not one of them.
Glover has had a hard time since the end of last summer, when he won twice. He won the Wyndham Championship and the St. Jude Classic in a row, which made people talk about the 2009 U.S. Open winner in the Ryder Cup. Glover hasn’t had a top 10 finish since that St. Jude win because he wasn’t picked for the U.S. team that lost to Europe in Rome. He missed the cut at the Sony Open and finished T58 at the Pebble Beach Pro Am last week because of bad weather. This year he has played in three events and finished T29 at the Sentry.
