Copa America raises security worries for the 2026 World Cup
Copa America raises security worries for the 2026 World Cup.

Following a Copa America 2024 semifinal game, there was a fight between fans and players that caused damage to the event. After beating Uruguay on the field, Colombia will play Argentina in the event final, which is sure to be exciting. They kept the early lead even though they were down to 10 men before halfway. Now, on July 14, they will play Lionel Messi’s team for the title.

The whole 90 minutes of the game were tense, and the tension spilled into the stands when the game was over. As soon as the game was over, Uruguayan players were seen running to a lower part of the stadium to fight Colombian fans. At first, people who saw the terrible scene were angry that professional sports were involved in the fight. In the end, though, more details about what happened did come to light.

People who were there say that the fight started because some Colombian fans were going after the families of Uruguay’s players. Darwin Nunez, a scorer for Liverpool, was one of the more well-known stars who fought. He wasn’t alone, though. Araujo, who plays center back for Barcelona, and Gimenez, who plays center back for Atletico Madrid, were also seen fighting with the Colombian fans.

The Uruguayan star says the players were looking out for family members.

Gimenez went on camera after the event to better explain what happened. “In a certain section, Colombian fans attacked all of our families,” the defender yelled. “They’re not letting us use the mic.” This is terrible, and our families were in danger. Our loved ones with brand-new babies had to be taken out quickly from the stands.

“It’s a terrible mess.” There was not a single police cop in sight. After half an hour, they showed up. What a mess. And we stood up for ourselves and the people we cared about. We hope that the managers are a little more careful with our families, the people, and the areas around the stadiums. Because games always end like this.

Without a question, the event did not reflect well on the tournament’s organizers.

CONMEBOL, which is in charge of football in South America, made a comment on social media a few hours after the game. The group said they were against “any act of violence that affects football.”

It said, “Our work is based on the conviction that soccer brings us together through its positive values.” “Intolerance and violence have no place on or off the field.” In the days left, we want everyone to give their all to cheering on their national teams and having a party they will never forget.

Concerns about the World Cup and the Copa America are raised by the incident.

Even with the statement, there are now major security worries for the Copa America 2024 final this coming weekend. This particular match is not only something to be worried about, but the whole 2026 World Cup is now making people nervous. The United States will (mostly) host the next World Cup, just like they do with the Copa America event right now.

The fight on Wednesday night was finally stopped by security staff, but the officers’ first response seemed too slow of a response. The sad truth is that fights between soccer fans have been a problem for decades.

But security needs to help calm things down before they get out of hand, especially at these big events. Another important thing for the government to do is to keep the families of the players safe, especially young children.

The event on Wednesday is terrible for the people in charge of organizing the Copa America in the United States. However, the sad problem will probably be on the minds of security officials during the 2026 World Cup.
