The Official World Golf Ranking list right now has Scottie Scheffler at the top. He’s the best player in the world, but that could change at any time. Things could change a lot if someone does a bad stretch or a very good stretch. He’s not too far away from the rest of the pack, so things could change.
These are some of the best players who might be able to win the title.
Who can take Scottie Scheffler’s place at the top of the OWGR?
6) Wyndham Clark
It takes a lot of skill to win a Major, and Wyndham Clark did it last year. If he wins the US Open, he must be pretty good at the sport. It wouldn’t be a wonder if he moved up from rank 10 to higher. That score might be low.
5) Brain Harman
Brian Harman won a Major in 2023 as well, and he is also very skilled. The player could easily move up a lot from ninth place to the top spot. Why couldn’t he do it again this year? He beat all the best golfers to win the Open and last year.
4) Max Homa
And Max Homa was one of the few bright spots for Team USA at the Ryder Cup. He had a great year in 2023. There’s no way he won’t be ranked better by this time next year. Right now he’s ranked seventh in the world. Homa has what it takes to become World No. 1.
3) This is Patrick Cantlay.
Patrick Cantlay is always around the fifth spot in the OWGR, but he doesn’t get much attention for it. He’s one of the world’s best players, but he hasn’t been able to make that step up yet. He can make a run for the top, though, if he can stay around that rank.
2) Viktor Hovland
Viktor Hovland is in a great position to move up the OWGR scoreboard. Jon Rahm is being left off the list because he will not be rising in the rankings on LIV Golf. He had a big year in 2023, when he jumped all the way to fourth place on the world rankings list. He is in great shape and had a great time at the Ryder Cup. Hovland is ready for another big year.
1) Rory McIlroy
Rory McIlroy is the most likely person to replace Scottie Scheffler as the World Number 1 golfer. This is mostly because he did it in 2023. McIlroy was the best golfer in the world for a short time. He and Jon Rahm had it for a while before Scheffler grabbed it and didn’t let go. Scheffler will lose his crown to McIlroy if nobody else does.
