Following in his dad’s path, James Carragher started out in the Liverpool academy system. He now plays regularly for League One team Wigan Athletic after going through the Latics’ youth system.
Carragher didn’t just want a comfortable job in the English leagues, though. He also wanted to play for Malta instead of England, where he was born and raised.
The centre back from Merseyside applied for Maltese citizenship in February. His father Jamie’s grandfather and mother were Maltese citizens, so he was qualified.
A confirmation from Malta FA head Bjorn Vassallo that they were now considering the 22-year-old for selection showed that he was successful in his search.
During the March international break, he was called up for the first time by Malta to play in their World Cup qualifiers against Finland and Poland.
Carragher played his first game at home against Finland in front of his family. He then went to Warsaw to play under the lights at the Stadion Narodowy, which has 58,000 seats.
There, he played Robert Lewandowski, one of the best strikers of his age, but he was able to hold off the talented Barcelona forward in his 157th game for Poland.
After the game, Carragher was able to get Lewandowski’s shirt, which was a very popular memento from his first international break.
From the stands, Reds great Carragher Sr talked about seeing his son play his first international game.
The Carraghers went on tour, and we had a great time,” he said on Stick to Football.
It wasn’t scary for me, but I could tell my dad was scared before. There were 50,000 people at the game. What do you do when you feel scared? You have something to drink.
“No, it was good.” It was my wish that Robert Lewandowski would start, but he came on. He did pretty well. In the last 20 minutes, he played against him.
Carragher will now go back to Wigan as they try to keep their spot in League One. With 10 games to go, they are seven points above the relegation zone.
He is only 22 years old, so he has plenty of time to add to his father’s shining football heritage. His father finished his career as Liverpool’s second-highest all-time appearance maker, with a Champions League, two FA Cups, and three League Cups to his name.
