On Friday, the Commanders made their official statement on their Twitter account. “The passing of Washington Legend Dave Butz, a two-time Super Bowl champion who was also a member of our Ring of Fame and 90 Greatest list, has left us in a state of profound grief. Our sincerest condolences go out to Dave’s family and friends at this difficult time “The team did the writing.
Butz had a great collegiate career from 1970-1972, and as a result, Purdue chose to induct him into the school’s all-time squad. The defensive tackle was a star on the field and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2014. He received First-Team All-America honours.
The St. Louis Cardinals used the fifth overall pick in the 1973 draught to choose Butz, making him the team’s first choice. After playing with the St. Louis Rams for a total of two seasons, he moved on to play for the Washington Redskins for the remaining 12 seasons of his career.
Butz was a key contributor to Washington’s two Super Bowl victories, which came in 1983 and 1988 respectively. In 1983, he set a career best with 11.5 sacks and was named to the All-Pro team. During his whole career in the NFL, he was only absent for a total of four games. When he retired, he held the record for the most games played (203) in the history of the Redskins club.
During this trying time, we are keeping the Butz family and their loved ones in our thoughts.
