LOS ANGELES — The United States beat Vietnam 3-0 in the Women’s World Cup. This was the most-watched soccer game in the U.S. since the men’s World Cup final last year, when 6.26 million people watched.

It is also the most people who speak both English and Spanish to watch a U.S. women’s group stage match than ever before.

The match that took place in Auckland, New Zealand, on Saturday afternoon started at 9 p.m. EDT on Friday night. On average, 5,261,000 people watched it on Fox, making it the second-most-watched group stage game since Fox started showing them in 2015. Nielsen and Fox said that the most people watched during the last 15 minutes: 6.5 million.

The 2019 match between the U.S. and Chile, which was shown on Fox, was still watched by an average of 5,337,000 people.

Fox and Nielsen say that it is a 99% rise over the first U.S. group stage match in France against Thailand four years ago, which started at 2:30 p.m. EDT.

The Spanish-language audience of 1 million across Telemundo, Peacock, Universo, and Telemundo online services was the most for a group stage match, and only the 2015 and 2019 finals had more viewers. Also, the crowd in Spain was almost twice as big as it was for the 2019 Thailand match.

Telemundo is a part of NBCUniversal, which is owned by Comcast Corp.

The total number of people who watched also includes the 307,831 people who watched via streaming in English and Spanish.

The next U.S. game is against the Netherlands on Wednesday night.
