Twitter is now called “X” after its owner, Elon Musk, changed the bird image on Monday. This is the latest big change since Musk took over the social media site.

As of early Monday, Twitter.com was still up and running, and the branding on the app version of the platform didn’t seem to have changed.

The well-known bird sign for Twitter, on the other hand, was changed into an X.

Early on Sunday morning, Musk put up a short video of a flashing “X.” When asked in a Twitter Spaces audio chat if the logo would change, he said “yes,” then told an unknown person, “We’re cutting the Twitter logo off the building with blow torches.”

By Sunday afternoon, x.com was already sending people to what used to be Twitter. The name was given back to Musk in 2017 after it was given up as part of the PayPal merger.

Since Musk bought Twitter for $44 billion last year, it has gone through a lot of big changes. The change from a bird to a “X” is the latest big one.

Musk changed the company’s name from Twitter Inc. to X Corp. in April.

The social media company also recently said that it would limit the number of direct messages that unknown users can send every day. It said this was to cut down on spam.

A message on the help center says that this change took place on Friday. Users will have to join the paid service that was started last year if they want to increase the number of texts they can send every day.

The social media giant is still having to deal with competition from Threads, a new app from Meta that came out earlier this month.

In a number of posts, Twitter CEO Linda Yaccarino said that the rebranding is the first step in taking the app in new ways. She used to be in charge of selling ads for NBCUniversal, the company that owns NBC News.

“X is the future state of unlimited interactivity centered on audio, video, messaging, payments/banking, and the development of a global marketplace for thoughts, goods, services, and possibilities,” she wrote. “Powered by AI, X will connect us all in ways we haven’t even thought of yet.”

Since he bought Twitter last year, Musk has said that he might make it into a bigger app. He has talked about making it into a “everything app” like what WeChat has become in China.

One of the most well-known names of the social media boom will no longer be around after these changes. The blue Twitter bird also came to be a well-known symbol, which the company used to like.

“Our logo is our most recognizable asset,” the company stated on a branding page that was still up as of Monday morning. “That’s why we take care of it so much.”

No one knows where the new image came from yet, but many people online have said that it looks like a Unicode symbol. The charity organization The Unicode Consortium is in charge of both emoji and Unicode, which is a standard for digital letters.
