Now that he is the boss of Birmingham City, Wayne Rooney wants to bring back Jack Butland, who used to play with him for England.
Butland, who is 30 years old, joined Rangers this summer after playing for Manchester United. He started out at St. Andrew’s as a kid and worked his way up. The goalie played one international game with Manchester United star Rooney, and the two went to several England camps together.
The Sun says that Butland is thinking about his future in Glasgow, just four months after signing with Rangers. This is because boss Michael Beale was fired two weeks ago. After Beale’s firing on Sunday, the Gers hired Philippe Clement, a Belgian manager.
Rooney wants to get a new goalkeeper in January and wants to take advantage of the fact that Butland’s future doesn’t look certain. Before joining Stoke City for an initial £3.3 million in 2013, the 30-year-old made his name at Birmingham.
Andland might change his mind if the Blues get the chance to play at St. Andrew’s again as Rooney tries to get them back to the top flight. The England player, who has nine caps, joined United on loan from Crystal Palace in the middle of last season. However, he didn’t play a single game while Erik ten Hag’s team won the Carabao Cup and finished third.
After his three-year deal with Palace ended in July, Rangers called him up and gave him a deal until 2027. His stay would end quickly if Rooney succeeded, but the deal might not go through until next summer, when a lot of high-paid Blues players leave as part of a big change in the Midlands now that the club is owned by Americans.
Neil Etheridge, who is thought to be making a lot of money, is currently on the bench while John Ruddy, 38, is the team’s first-choice goalie. In June, Etheridge, who is 33 years old, will be a free agent. This will make room for someone like Butland to get paid.
Rooney has big goals in the Midlands. On Thursday, when he was introduced to the press, he said, “Of course, we will try to get promoted this year.” With the new guys we brought in over the summer, that’s our goal. We will definitely work for it. The team wants to return to the Premier League.
