For a short time at the World Baseball Classic, everything looked great for Puerto Rico’s team. In the last game of Pool play, Puerto Rico beat the Dominican Republic and moved on to the quarterfinals.
But the happiness turned into worry very quickly.
Edwin Diaz, the superstar closer for the New York Mets was called upon to close the game off. He did just that retiring the Dominican team in order in the bottom of the ninth, preserving a 5-2 win for Puerto Rico.
The Puerto Rican team rushed onto the field to celebrate as soon as they heard they had won. But the party didn’t last long. Because Diaz was on the ground in pain just seconds after striking out Teoscar Hernández to end the game. The trainers came out quickly after his teammates called for them.
Even though that looked bad, things got worse.
Trainers tried to carry Diaz off the field because both teams’ players were worried about his health. Even that was too much pain. Diaz finally got to a wheelchair while being held up by two people. He didn’t put any weight on his right leg while he did this.
Fans of baseball were, of course, very worried about the injury.
Diaz, who has been an All-Star five times, just had one of the best seasons ever for a reliever. In 2022, he saved 32 games for the Mets and had a 1.31 ERA, 0.90 WHIP, and 118 strikeouts in 62 innings.
