The U.S. U-17 young national team played very well in their 3-2 loss to Germany in the World Cup, but Germany scored two late goals to tie the game and eventually won. The game took place at Si Jalak Harupat Stadium in West Java, Indonesia.
The Baby Yanks, coached by Gonzalo Segares, were trying to make it to the semifinals of the U-17 World Cup for only the second time in 18 years. They had been to seven of the eight tournaments that time.
After goals from Charles Herrmann (Borussia Dortmund) and Max Moerstadt (Hoffenheim), Taha Habroune (Columbus Crew) and David Vazquez (Philadelphia Union) tied the game in the 24th and 80th minutes, respectively. Hamburg’s Bilal Yalcinkaya then won it in the 87th minute.
The Americans had 66% of the ball and were trying to tie the game for most of it, but the highly favoured Germans only made 14 of the 33 attempts. The U.S. went 2-1 in the group stage, with their only loss coming to France 3-0. They did much better in the Round of 16, even though they lost the same game.
Since making it to the last eight in 2001 and 2003, the U-17 Americans have only been to the quarterfinals once. That was in 2017, when a team led by future senior players Timothy Weah, Josh Sargent, and Sergiño Dest made it all the way to the finals, where they lost to England.
This time, Segares’ team was led by Keylor Figueroa, a young player for Liverpool who is the son of former Honduras international Meynor, Nimfasha Berchimas, a forward for Charlotte FC who scored three goals, and Cruz Medina, a defender for San Jose Earthquakes. The US beat South Korea and Burkina Faso before losing badly to France in the final. They came in second place in Group E.
The only time the U.S. U-17 team has been to the World Cup quarterfinals was in 1999, when Landon Donovan, DaMarcus Beasley, and Kyle Beckerman were rising stars.
