This is the best start ever for Alison Lee at the Aramco Team Series Riyadh in Saudi Arabia, which is part of the Ladies European Tour.
Lee, an American who is 28 years old, came in second place at the LPGA’s BMW Ladies Championship in Korea last week. After two straight 61s at Riyadh Golf Club this week, she’s well on her way to winning a trophy.
Lee beat the previous two-day record of 16-under set by Gwladys Nocera (2008 Goteborg Masters), Kylie Henry (2014 Ladies German Open), Anne van Dam (2018 Estralla Damm Ladies Open), and Emily Kristine Pedersen (2020 Tipsport Czech Ladies Open). She finished with a score of 22 under after 36 holes. Her 61s tied the record for the lowest round in LET history, and she set a new record by making eight straight birdies in the first round.
Lee said, “At the start of the week, I wouldn’t have believed you if you told me I would shoot 22 under in two days.” “I’m really pleased with my present situation. A lot of my putts were really good. From a statistical point of view, this season has been great for driver and greens-in-regulation. Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to trust my putter, which is the most important thing. But I feel great this week; the speed has been great. I’ve gotten better at putting very hard, which is important out here if you want to make birdies. I wish I knew why. I have been putting really hard with my coach at home.
Lee missed her putt for a birdie on the last hole, which would have made the score 60. But a tap-in for 61 and a six-shot lead over Carlota Ciganda made the last 36 holes of her career the best of her career.
“When there were five holes left, I thought, ‘Okay, let’s try to make a charge here,'” Lee went on. “Unfortunately, I missed my putt on 16, which made me a little sad.” And the putt I had on 18 was tricky. “But yeah, like I said, I’m really happy with my round.”
