Yon de Luisa, the head of the Mexican Football Federation, said that the United States, Canada, and Mexico will host a big tournament in 2025. We already know that the three countries in North America will also host the World Cup in 2026. But the competition in the summer of 2025 will be seen as practice for the World Cup.
National teams seem to be taking part in the World Cup dry run tournament
Some people have said that the tournament could just be the Club World Cup, but journalist Jon Arnold isn’t so sure. Arnold says that de Luisa talked about the national team when he talked about the 2025 tournament. This makes it sound like it will be an international tournament with teams from different countries.
For the competition, CONCACAF and FIFA will work together.
De Luisa said these things while talking about how Mexican soccer has changed in important ways. Mexico didn’t make it out of the group stage of the World Cup. El Tri and Poland both had the same number of points in Group C, but Poland scored more goals than El Tri. So, Tata Martino, the manager of Mexico, did not have his contract renewed so he could stay in the job. Possible changes to Liga MX were also talked about, like how likely it was that promotion and relegation would come back.
The U.S. could still host the 2025 Club World Cup
The Club World Cup could still be held in the United States in 2025, though. The country that will host the club competition has not been named yet. But the U.S. is reputedly to be in the running to host the tournament. Before the 2026 World Cup, it’s clear that FIFA wants soccer to keep growing in the U.S.
Last month, the president of FIFA, Gianni Infantino, said that the 2025 Club World Cup would have 32 teams instead of 24. The players union and leagues all over the world strongly disagreed with the idea. But the plan to make the competition bigger isn’t set in stone yet. Before the expansion could happen, the six confederations would have to agree to it.
