Carlo Ancelotti is shocked by how Manchester City beat Real Madrid in the Champions League.
Over the last ten years or so, the Champions League has been “their” tournament. However, Real Madrid lost badly to Manchester City in the second leg of this year’s semi-final, so they won’t be adding to their list of recent wins. After a 1-1 draw at Estadio Santiago Bernabéu, the match looked like it could go either way. However, Pep Guardiola’s team came out strong at the City of Manchester Stadium and tore Madrid apart in the first half. The 2-0 score at halftime was very unfair to Carlo Ancelotti’s team.
The Italian talked to the Spanish TV station Movistar right after the game, and he didn’t know how his team of stars could have lost so badly.
After halftime, Manuel Akanji and Julián lvarez added to the two goals scored by Bernardo Silva in the first half. In the end, Madrid lost 4-0 in Manchester.
Ancelotti said, “We’ll do better in the Champions League next year.”
How do you explain losing so badly?
They played better, so they should have won. From the start, they put a lot of pressure on us, which helped them because it made it hard for us to play out from the back and gave them the lead. It was hard to get back into the game after that. In the second half, we tried, but it didn’t work.
What wasn’t there? Carvajal told me that you gave up too quickly.
It doesn’t make sense to judge the game now. It’s a terrible loss, it hurts a lot. But it is possible. In the semi-finals of the Champions League, you play against good teams. If they play better than you, you’re out. All done. But we’ll learn from it and be stronger for the Champions League next year.”
After the game, what did you say to Guardiola?
I told him it was great that his team did better than us. We were able to beat them last year, but they beat us this year. That’s how things work in sports. Sometimes you can lose.”
When they went up 1-0, what did you tell Vinicius? He looked mad.
I don’t remember, I don’t know.
“There’s no need to make a big deal out of it,” said Ancelotti.
Shortly after that, Ancelotti had his regular press conference after the game, where he talked more about some of the things he had talked about in the flash interview.
How do you judge the loss?
I think that’s just how football is. We played opponents who were good enough to win. They went ahead and kept getting better until they reached the final. We were better than them last year, but they were better than us today.
Do you feel like people are asking you questions?
No one is unsure. I think the president made that point very clear a few weeks ago. No one is unsure.
What does Madrid need to do differently in future games like this?
It’s clear that the plan needs to be changed. We didn’t follow the plan. You don’t have to make a big deal out of it. Both last year and this year, this team did very well. We didn’t make it to any more finals. This team has done well, and next season they will do even better.
Does the loss hurt because of how the players played or because of how good the other team was?
Attitude? Why talk about how people feel? No one could accuse us of having a bad attitude. This loss is just a step toward making next year better.
What do you think about the season?
This season has been good. We still have a few games left to play, but it’s been a good season so far. I think getting to the semi-finals of the Champions League is a big deal because only four teams make it that far. Sometimes you can lose a semi-final.
Manchester City’s Worth
Today, they were better than us, so they should have won. They should have made it to the final.
What does this team need to do to win the next time they play them?
Last year, this team beat City in a semifinal. They did better than us this year. We’re already thinking about the next Champions League, just like we’ve been doing for this one.
What did the president say to you?
I won’t tell you here what the president has privately told me.
