Unfortunately for Carlos Alcaraz, it has been confirmed that his coach Juan Carlos Ferrero will not be able to attend the 2024 Australian Open with him.
Ferrero won’t be able to go to Melbourne because he needs keyhole surgery on his left knee and will have to use crutches afterward.
Instead, Alcaraz will be joined in Australia by Samuel Lopez, a skilled Spanish coach who works with Pablo Carreno Busta, a former world No. 10 player.
Lopez was at the Queen’s Club Championships this year with Alcaraz as the 20-year-old won his first win on grass at the ATP 500 event.
He works at the Juan Carlos (JC) Ferrero Tennis Academy in Alicante, Spain, and used to teach Ferrero, who was a world number one tennis player. The 53-year-old old man has also worked with Nicolas Almagro and Guillermo Garcia Lopez, two former Spanish ATP pros.
Ferrero has been Alcaraz’s coach since 2019, when he was 16 years old. He has been a big part of the Spanish star’s rise to the top of the sport.
When Alcaraz won his first Grand Slam title at the US Open in 2022, he was only 19 years old. He became the youngest player in ATP history to hold the title.
In July, the 20-year-old beat Novak Djokovic, who had won Wimbledon seven times, in a thrilling five-set final at the All England Club. It was his second Major title.
The No. 2 player in the world has won 12 ATP titles so far, with four of those wins coming at ATP Masters 1000 events.
Due to a knee injury, Alcaraz missed the 2023 Australian Open. Djokovic beat Stefanos Tsitsipas to win a record-setting 10th title at the event.
Since his last match at the Melbourne Grand Slam in 2022, when he lost to Matteo Berrettini in five sets in the third round, the Spaniard has come a long way.
Since the world’s No. 2 player didn’t play in any ATP events before the Major, Ferrero was asked last month if Alcaraz would be ready for the Australian Open with just open play.
“That’s something you can never be sure of.” You left home too early sometimes, and the event doesn’t go well. You can think in many different ways. We haven’t played Australia this year, and he comes in second. Ferrero told Marca, “That means there is no need to play a tournament early.”
“Carlos is a player who gets into a game quickly; you rarely see him out of rhythm.” The truth is that he is more dangerous after the round of 16, but not after the quarterfinals. I’m sure that the two practice games and the training sessions will help us do well in the event.
