There will be 14 venues in the United States that will hold games in the 2024 Copa América, the prestigious South American men’s soccer tournament that will be led by world champion Argentina and also include the U.S. and Mexican national teams.
Conmebol, which is in charge of football in South America, chose 11 big stadiums and 3 small MLS venues for the 16-team, 32-game event that will take place from 20 to July 14.
As planned, the first game will take place at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, and the final will take place at Hard Rock Stadium in greater Miami. Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte and MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., will host the quarterfinals, Conmebol said on Monday. Charlotte will also have the match for third place.
AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas; NRG Stadium in Houston; State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona; and Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas will all host the quarterfinals.
The four top-seeded teams also found out where their group games would be played. The US will play in Arlington, Atlanta, and Kansas City, Missouri (at Arrowhead Stadium).
Lionel Messi’s Argentina was put in Atlanta (the first game of the event on June 20), East Rutherford, and Miami. Brazil will play at SoFi Stadium in Las Vegas, SoFi Stadium in greater Los Angeles, and Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California. Mexico is going to play in Houston, Glendale, and greater L.A.
The group draw will happen in Miami on Thursday night.
Paraguay, Chile, Peru, Ecuador, Venezuela, and Bolivia are the other South American countries that are taking part.
The USMNT made it to the Copa América even though they lost to Trinidad and Tobago.
Two more teams from the Concacaf region—Jamaica, Panama, and the winners of the March 23 playoffs in Frisco, Texas—will also be in the tournament. Those teams are Canada vs. Trinidad and Tobago and Costa Rica vs. Honduras.
America’s Cup, which has been held since 1916, was also held in the US in 2016. In a shootout at MetLife Stadium, Chile beat Argentina to win the title.
After the World Cup and the European Championship, it is the third most popular men’s football event with national teams.
The only metro area to get two venues next summer is Greater Kansas City. Arrowhead field, home of the NFL’s Chiefs, and Children’s Mercy Park, a small field in Kansas City, Kan., which is home to MLS’s Sporting Kansas City, will be used. One Copa group game was given to each venue.
Q2 Stadium in Austin and Exploria Stadium in Orlando were the other two small MLS sites that were chosen. (Both NFL and MLS teams play at the places in Charlotte and Atlanta.)
Eight big Copa América venues will also be used for World Cup games in 2026. These games will take place in the US, Mexico, and Canada. The final is likely to be held at either AT&T Stadium or MetLife Stadium. Over the next few months, FIFA will give each site a name.
