Copa America 2024: USA and Uruguay Kick Off Group C with a Draw

USA and Uruguay are tied for first place in Group C with two points after the first day of the Copa America 2024.

The US started their Copa América season with a dominant 2-0 win over Bolivia at AT&T Stadium in Dallas. However, after the first matchday, Uruguay is in first place in Group C.

Today was the fourth and most exciting day of group play at the Copa América.

USA and Uruguay: United States 2, Bolivia 0

• The US won its first World Cup group stage game, giving it its second win of the tournament. It now has a record of 2-3-0 (W-L-D).
• With 30 goals for his country, Christian Pulisic became the sixth American to do so. At 25, he’s the second-youngest USMNT player to score 30 goals, after Landon Donovan. He did it in 69 caps, which is the fewest caps any USMNT player has ever needed to reach that number.
• Pulisic’s goal after 2 minutes and 23 seconds is the fastest the USMNT has ever scored in a competitive match against a CONMBEOL opponent. He was also the second USMNT player in Copa América history to score a goal and set up another. Clint Dempsey did it twice.
• After 36 years and 263 days, Tim Ream became the oldest USMNT field player to ever be named to a Copa América team.
• For Bolivia, the last time they won a Copa América game was in 2015, when they beat Ecuador 3-2 in their second group game. This is the only win in their last 31 Copa América games since they lost the final in 1997.
• Since beating Mexico 3-1 in the semifinals of the 1997 Copa América, Bolivia has not beaten a CONCACAF team in the tournament.
• When it comes to the Copa América, CONMEBOL teams have won eight of the last eleven games against the US.

Uruguay 3, Panama 1

• Uruguay is now 5-0-0 (W-L-D) all-time against Panama, having scored 18 goals to 2 in those games.
• In its last five Copa América games against CONCACAF teams, Uruguay has won four of them.
• Araújo’s goal is the second one scored from outside the box in this Copa. He scored Uruguay’s first goal from outside the box in the Copa América in 13 years. Luis Suárez scored the last goal for Uruguay against Peru in the semifinals of the 2011 tournament.
• Drake Núñez has scored nine goals in his last six games for Uruguay in all categories.
• Matías Viña scored Uruguay’s first goal as an international player.
• Today, seven of Uruguay’s starting eleven play professional football in one of the five best leagues in Europe, which are England, Germany, Spain, Italy, or France.
• In a serious game (not a friendly), Panama hasn’t come back to win after giving up the first goal since January 2022 in a CONCACAF World Cup qualifier. After 5 minutes, it was down 1-0 to Jamaica, but it came back to win 3-2 in Panama City.
