THE CLEVELAND — Gabbie Marshall, an Iowa guard, said on Sunday that she had to delete her social media accounts because of the mean comments she got after drawing an offensive foul against UConn that helped decide the game.

Gabbie Marshall got death threats after the call against UConn

The Huskies had the ball and were behind 70–69, but they had a chance to take the lead. But with 3.9 seconds left, Aaliyah Edwards was called for an offensive foul because she blocked Marshall, who was trying to keep the ball from getting to Paige Bueckers, who was guarding her.

There has been a lot of talk about the foul call since Friday night, but Iowa won and will play South Carolina in the national championship game on Sunday.

During a press conference before the national title game, Marshall said, “I’ve gotten a lot of hate comments.” “I’m not sure.” The call wasn’t made by me. So I don’t understand why they’re mad at me.”

She said she had seen the arguments about the call, especially about whether the officials should have made that call right then, knowing that it would have changed how the game finished.

“When the right call’s the right call, it’s not fair to say you can’t make that call with 10 seconds left when you can make it with 10 minutes, or two minutes left,” he said. “If it’s the right choice, it is the right choice.” Even though I can’t make the calls, I personally thought it was an illegal screen, and it wasn’t the first one of the game.

Marshall got to guard Bueckers during the game because he was the team’s defense stopper. Former player of the year Bueckers couldn’t score, especially in the second half. In the fourth quarter, he only got three points. Bueckers scored 17 points but didn’t do much with them. He made 7 of 17 shots.

After the game, Marshall said she tried to stay on her hip because she knew UConn would try to get Bueckers open for a shot that would win the game. Marshall thinks she did everything right on defense, just like she does every game. This makes the talk about the call even more annoying.

“I got rid of social media,” she said. “That one play seemed to take over the whole game, even though I worked hard the whole time to guard her and get over screens. I felt like that play took over everything.” Everyone is only talking about that. That it was a great game between two great teams is not being talked about.

Bluder, the coach of Iowa, said it was “unbelievable” and “immature” to criticize Marshall for her part in the play.

“It’s unbelievable to me that you’re gonna criticize a 22-year-old kid for something that she had no control over,” said Bluder. “I thought we did a great job with that. We changed over to it. I thought the point of our trip was to fight. People are so childish to criticize a 22-year-old for doing their job and doing it really, really well.
