With a 3-1 win over Iceland at home, the Germany women’s national team moved closer to qualifying for the next European Championship. They now have a perfect record in two qualifying games.
Lea Schüller, a striker for Bayern Munich, scored the first goal quickly with a strong header after only five minutes. As soon as Iceland tied the game, Schüller scored again with a header to put Germany back ahead.
Lena Oberdorf, a star player for Wolfsburg who will soon join Bayern Munich, doubled the lead from a corner right before halftime.
Some highlights below:
The Germans were still very strong in the air, but no more goals were scored in the second half.
That’s Coach Horst Hrubesch’s starting group for the day. Kathrin Hendrich and Alexandra Popp of Wolfsburg just had birthdays, and this win made them even happier.
Also, Germany’s group for this year’s Summer Olympics in Paris is now set: Zambia will play with Australia and the United States in the group stage, which will take place on July 25, 28, and 31. It looks like Germany and the USWNT will be the favourites to get out of their group.
However, Germany lost 3-2 to Zambia in a match before the World Cup.
