In the history of CONCACAF, the Mexican national team has been the best team in their own area. That’s, of course, every country in North and Central America as well as the Caribbean. But they’ve also done well in the south, where they’ve been invited many times to CONMEBOL’s Copa América, the South American title. They have a good record in the Copa America because they are the best guest team that has ever played in the games.
What Mexico has done in the Copa America
Every year since 1993, CONMEBOL has had guest teams play in the Copa América. But because of COVID-19, there were no guest teams in 2021. The tournament is set up with three groups of four teams, but CONMEBOL only has ten teams, so these invited teams help make the game more complete. Except for 2019 and 2021, Mexico has been one of these teams every time.
One thing El Tri has shown is that they are good enough to play against the best teams in the Western Hemisphere, even though they have never won Copa América.
They made it out of the group stage all seven times they played in the Copa, from 1993 to 2007.
During this time, they also had their best finishes in the event. In 1997, 1999, and 2007, they won third place. The last four was where Mexico lost in 1993 and 2001. Any country that isn’t in CONMEBOL has only played in the Copa América final twice, both times coming in second place.
And only Honduras has placed third as an invited team, and that was in 2001.
Getting the best of them
Mexico has done better at the Copa than some real South American countries, even though they are not from South America and have only been playing since 1993.
When it comes to Copa América, Ecuador and Venezuela have never made it to the final or come in third place. That means Mexico is better than both of them.
It’s actually Mexico who has more medals than Bolivia (5 to 2) when you add up the ones won for first, second, and third place. Brazil, on the other hand, won the event and came in second. Meanwhile, Mexico is feeling good after getting three bronze medals.
Even though Mexico didn’t make it out of their group two of the last three times they played, their overall record is still very good.
With a record of 19 wins, 13 draws, and 16 losses, and a goal difference of 66 to 62, Mexico has always been a winning team in this tournament.
This is a big deal because they are up against teams like Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay.
Mexico will now think about the year 2024. The United States will host the next Copa América. But El Tri is really a home team in the US. Since their group games are in Houston, Los Angeles, and Phoenix, they’ll definitely have a lot of fans at every game. They made it to the quarterfinals of the 2016 Copa, which was also held in the US, thanks to this “home” food.
It won’t be easy to beat their best score at the tournament. But since they are in a group with Ecuador, Venezuela, and Jamaica, they shouldn’t have any trouble making it to the next round.
After that, anything could happen.
