Caitlin Clark and the Best Dressed at the W.N.B.A. Draft

The next generation of basketball stars is now ready for the big stage. At last, fashion is taking notice.

Men are better than peacocks when it comes to peacocks. There are a lot of detailed records of their tube walks, and the NBA and NFL draft days were all about their suits.

Their love of Vuitton and Hermès has even led to the creation of their own brands.
On Monday night, at the W.N.B.A. draft, things changed. This was after the most-watched college basketball game in history and the most-watched basketball game at any level since 2019. Some people, like Katelyn Clark, Angel Reese, and Cameron Brink, saw that style marking and moved it up one.

In terms of making an impression, they are just as good at that as they are on the court. Fashion finally seems to understand that. Brands and stylists are waking up and getting in touch.

Rickea Jackson, the No. 4 pick of the night and player going to the Los Angeles Sparks, said, “People are seeing us for who we are now.”

The first was Ms. Clark, the first pick, who is going to play for the Indiana Fever. She broke another record by being the first basketball player, man or woman, to be fully dressed by Prada for the draft.

Along with a short rhinestone top, tinted aviators, and black sling-backs, she wore a white satin miniskirt and an oversize shirt with rhinestone buttons. Her bag was a small patent leather Prada. In the end, it was very “future of my sport.” She told them that Prada had reached out to her or at least her style team, which is a different kind of coup.

It wasn’t just her who went haute. The seventh pick, Ms Reese, went to the Chicago Sky. She worked with Naomi Elizee, the fashion editor at Vogue who dressed her for her draft announcement in that magazine. She looked like she had taken a diversion on her way to the Met Gala. Check out her backless Bronx and Banco silver knit dress with a deep V-neck and hood, along with the Christian Louboutin shoes that went with it. As she walked down the orange carpet, she made sure to mention the brand.

Ms. Reese said of her dress, “I wanted something that was going to pop.” And she was ready to seize the chance. She said, “I don’t just want to be a great basketball player.” “I want to make a difference.” That’s what I want to do. I know how to cook. I can do hair. I know how to do nails. I can handle everything.

Why does all of this matter in the end?

The fastest way to build a personal brand is through fashion. This can lead to impact, which can lead to a bigger stage. Not to mention sponsors, which are a big deal because men and women still make different amounts of money in professional basketball. The base pay for Ms. Clark is $76,535.

Ms. Brink was picked second and was going to the Los Angeles Sparks. She was wearing a black and white Balmain dress that was asymmetrical and had a slit up to the upper thigh and a rose on one shoulder. The actor and founder of Sweet July, Ayesha Curry, sent her a stylist to help her find the dress. Ms. Brink’s godbrother is Steph Curry, Ayesha’s stylist.

Also, Alissa Pili, who is Samoan and Indigenous Alaskan, was picked by the Minnesota Lynx. She worked with designer Jason Vu to make a dress that, in her words, honoured her history and the people who helped her get into the draft. The gold Polynesian print on the skirt and the way it was cut were meant to show off the tribal tattoos on her leg and shoulder and, as she put it, “represent them on the biggest stage.”

Aaliyah Edwards (No. 6, Washington Mystics), who carried a crystal handbag made like a basketball because, as she put it, “I always have a ball in my hand,” and Celeste Taylor (No. 15, Indiana Fever) were also wearing a lot of white.

The No. 3 pick, Kamilla Cardoso, wore a sharply tailored suit. Ms Jackson, who took a cue from the Oscar red carpet, switched out the red bustier, pants and Cartier crystal sunglasses she wore on the orange carpet for a sparkling silver suit when she went on stage to be drafted.
