In 2001, Andre Agassi said something shocking: he said it was doubtful that he would play in the Davis Cup again.
The American was the defending winner at that year’s Australian Open, and he beat Jiri Vanek in the first match 6-0, 7-5, 6-3. Andre Agassi told the press after the match that he would not be playing in the Davis Cup because of how it was set up and how busy his tour schedule was already. It was said by the American that he no longer had the drive to play in the event.
“Well, there are a few reasons. The first thing Andre Agassi said was, “The format of Davis Cup is really not something that has shown me over the years as something that is likely to change.”
“Every year I hear that if I just commit and we win, it puts us in a better position to change how Davis Cup works, and you know what? My participation won’t change that anymore.” Another reason that I think is just as strong is that I no longer have it in me. “I just don’t,” he said.
For that to happen, the eight-time Grand Slam winner said, there had to be a system that worked for everyone and a lot of things had to be talked about.

“It’s not even this year. It will stay that way until there is a style that works for everyone. I don’t want to just point out a problem without thinking of a way to fix it. I think there are ways to fix it. I’m not sure if that will happen, though, because a lot of people need to work together for it to happen. “And I know for sure that by taking part, it’s not going to happen for me,” he said.
It was in 2005 that Agassi played in his last Davis Cup match. He played against Croatia in the first round of the World Group for the United States. He beat Ivan Ljubicic in straight sets.

Because of his skill, Andre Agassi was on three US Davis Cup teams that won the trophy.
When the US played Australia in the final in 1990, it was the first of these. Agassi beat Richard Fromberg in the first match of the tie and then beat Darren Cahill, who would later become his coach. Before Agassi quit, both players won a set each. The United States had already won, though, and ended up with a 3-2 score.
The US then made it to the final of the 1991 Davis Cup, where they played France. With a win over Guy Forget in the first match, he put his team ahead. The French, on the other hand, came back to win 3-1.
This was Agassi’s second Davis Cup win with the US. They beat Switzerland in the final in 1992. In the first match of the final, he beat Jakob Hlasek, and the US went on to win 3-1.
He also played in the 1995 Davis Cup and beat Andrea Gaudenzi and Mats Wilander in the quarterfinals against Italy and the semifinals against Sweden. The United States beat Russia 3-2 in the final, but he did not play anyway.
Agassi won 30 of the 36 Davis Cup matches he played in total.
