Jason Dufner, who won the PGA Championship once, is one of the stars of LIV Golf’s marketing event.
The event starts on December 8 in Abu Dhabi and lasts for three days. It has four rounds and gives three spots on the Saudi-backed circuit for the 2024 season. Out of the 60 people who started, only the top 20 will make it to the last three rounds. The scores will start over after Round 1, though. Plus, more than a dozen players who didn’t have to play in the first round will be added to the top 20.
People who finish fourth through tenth will be able to play in the Asian Tour’s International Series, which is linked to LIV Golf.
The most experienced player in the group is Dufner, 46, who has won five times on the PGA Tour, including the Wanamaker in 2013 at Oak Hill. In his career, Dufner has made more than 430 PGA Tour starts and earned $28 million by playing on the U.S. Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup teams in 2012 and 2013. On the other hand, Dufner hasn’t made the PGA Tour playoffs in five years and hasn’t finished in the top ten in four years.
Vic Dubuisson and Jeff Overton are also in the field. This 40-year-old man is best known for playing for the U.S. in the 2010 Ryder Cup. He hasn’t played a full season on the PGA Tour since 2016 because of an illness that could have killed him. Dubuisson, 33, was once a very good player who helped Europe win the Ryder Cup in 2014. He hasn’t played in a major since 2016.
Kyle Stanley, Kevin Chappell, Martin Trainer, Chris Stroud, and past NCAA champion Braden Thornberry are some of the other well-known players.
The Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia, which backs LIV Golf, is still in talks with the PGA Tour to create a new organisation. The 2024 season will be the third one for LIV Golf. It’s no secret that many businesses want to sponsor the tour, which makes it unclear whether the PIF deal will actually go through. If the tour and PIF decide to work together, there is also no promise that LIV will continue. The PGA Tour, DP World Tour, and PIF have come together to form a new organisation. This organisation will “undertake a full and objective empirical data-driven evaluation of LIV and its prospects and potential and will make a good faith assessment of the benefits of team golf in general. PIF, the PGA Tour, and the DP World Tour will work together to determine how best to integrate team golf into PGA Tour and DP World Tour events going forward.”
The framework agreement between the tour and PIF says that a new agreement must be finished by the end of the year. However, the date can be pushed back if both parties agree.
