From the mound to the golf course, John Smoltz is showing what a great athlete he is.
The Hall of Famer from Major League Baseball got into the final stage through PGA Tour Champions Q-School. He tied for 14th place in this week’s first stage at Buckhorn Springs in Valrico, Florida. Smoltz got one of the 18 spots into the final stage by shooting 71-73-74-71, which put him one stroke over 289 for the week.
Smoltz had never done better than T-54 in the first stage of PGA Tour Champions Q-School in the three times he had played.
This month, the final stage will be held at TPC Scottsdale’s Champions Course, with a group of 80 golfers. Smoltz, 55, will be one of them. There are only five cards left.
After a great baseball career, Smoltz has been slowly making a name for himself on the golf course. In 2015, he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. He also won the Cy Young Award and was picked for eight National League All-Star teams.
While Smoltz hasn’t played on the PGA Tour Champions since 2021, he has played in a total of nine matches. He also played in the U.S. Senior Open in 2018.
