LeBron James, an NBA superstar, hinted in May that he might quit after his team lost in the playoffs. Now, he has said he will be back for another season, which will be his 21st in the NBA.

On Wednesday, at the ESPY Awards, the league’s all-time top scorer told the crowd what he was going to do.

“I don’t care how many more points I score or what I can or can’t do on the floor,” said James. “The real question for me is whether or not I can play this game without cheating. I’ll stop playing when I can no longer give the game everything I have. “You guys are lucky that the day is not today.”

The crowd at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles cheered loudly at that point.

After the Lakers lost to the Denver Nuggets in the Western Conference Finals last season, James told reporters that he had “a lot to think about” about his future in the NBA.

James has said many times that he wants to play in the NBA with his eldest son, Bronny, who has signed to play basketball at the University of Southern California. In 2024, when his father turns 40, James could be picked in the NBA Draft.

“You know what keeps me coming back every year? Coaching my boys and their teammates and watching them play,” James said on Wednesday. “When I see those kids, it reminds me why I play. Those kids bring me back to where I need to be, which is just the pure love of this beautiful game. So, sure, I still have something. A lot left.”

The 38-year-old won the Best-Record-Breaking-Performance ESPY because he beat Kareem Abdul-Jabbar to become the NBA’s top scorer last season.
