Lionel Messi had to make a shocking change to his jersey number with PSG because of a crazy turn of events.

Lionel Messi has been great since he came back to PSG after winning the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. The 35-year-old star saved his team in recent, important games against Monaco and Toulouse, giving them an eight-point lead in Ligue 1 over Marseille and Lens.

So far, PSG is still in the running to win all three of the biggest tournaments in the same year. They have a big lead in Ligue 1 and will play Bayern Munich in the Round of 16 of the Champions League. In the French Cup, they will play Olympique Marseille, which should be a great game (Coupe de France).

Lionel Messi did something we rarely see him do at the traditional Coupe de France, which was a very surprising turn of events. At PSG, his number changed in a big way. Find out why that happened by reading this.

When PSG played Olympique Marseille in the Coupe de France, Lionel Messi changed his jersey number?

Lionel Messi hasn’t worn the number 10 on his jersey since he joined PSG in 2021. This is because Neymar has worn that number for many years in the French club. So Messi chose to play with the number 30. Even with that first change, Lionel Messi broke every record there was for how many shirts PSG could sell.

Lionel Messi had to make another change in the French Cup (Coupe de France). Players can only start with numbers from 1 to 11 in this traditional tournament. So, Messi couldn’t play number 30 in the Round of 16 game against Olympique Marseille.

Lionel Messi had to change his number, which is something that doesn’t happen very often at PSG. He took the field with the legendary 10. There were lots of rumours that he might use numbers like 9 or 11. He could have used number 7, since Kylian Mbappe can’t play because he’s hurt.

At the end of the day, Messi could only wear number 10 if Neymar gave it to him. In the end, that’s what did happen. Messi went back to number 10 while Neymar wore number 11 against Olympique Marseille.

It’s important to remember that Messi’s Barcelona B jersey numbers were 8, 9, and 11 many years ago. Lionel Messi wore number 30 on his first game with the first team. But just three years later, when Ronaldinho left the club, he took number 10 when he was given the chance.
