A lot of people were upset about Lexi Thompson’s sponsor invite to last week’s Shriners Children’s Open. Not so much at the host of the event, but at Thompson.
The LPGA star has had a rough year. She hasn’t won on the LPGA Tour in four years, and she wasn’t sure she’d keep her card for next year until she recently got two top tens.
It made sense for people to worry that this wasn’t the right time to try to play against guys. Thompson is very good, but did she want to try her game at that level after all of her recent problems?
It doesn’t make sense to think that way.
Thompson did a great job during her two days in Las Vegas. She didn’t make the cut, but she still impressed. She hit drives 300 yards, was close to making the cut on Friday, and had good scores of 73–69. They would have been better if she hadn’t made a few costly mistakes, which she admits could have made her the first woman in modern times to make the cut in a PGA Tour event.
“I’m very proud. Thompson said, “I played really well today.” In the second round, he hit 12 of 14 fairways and only missed four greens. “As the day went on, I tried to stay focused on my swing thoughts and my range goals, and I just enjoyed the whole thing.”I was aware that I needed to bring my “A” game. As the week began, there was more to the message than just golf. Getting kids excited is what I love most.
Thompson might get ideas from this. Annika Sorenstam was already a well-known player with a Hall of Fame record when she played in a PGA Tour event 20 years ago. But the experience made her feel good about herself. On the LPGA Tour that year, she won five more times.
Thompson might use this to feel better about himself. She’s only 28 years old, so she still has a lot of golf to play.
And it could mean that other PGA Tour events follow the same path of sponsor exemptions, which always gets unfair criticism.
Four company exemptions are given out at regular PGA Tour events, and two of them must go to PGA Tour and Korn Ferry Tour players. Because they are open to everyone, the main sponsor or event can ask almost anyone.
Most of the time, you don’t hear about it unless it’s a famous person who is in trouble, like this woman. And those spots could go to a neighborhood pro, a club pro, or a player from the country. People often said that Thompson was taking a spot away from a player who “deserved” it more.
Thompson has two older brothers who are also skilled players. “Playing with the guys… amazing feeling,” Thompson said. “Being around guys my whole life, I’ve always wanted to play in a PGA Tour event.” The most important things were seeing the kids outside the walls and then meeting some Shriners missionaries. “That was the most wonderful.”
