As it turned out, Dawn Staley of South Carolina wasn’t the only head coach who got a question this Saturday about transgender players playing college sports.
When Lisa Bluder, the head coach of Iowa, met with the reporters this afternoon, she was also asked about transgender athletes.
Bluder wouldn’t say if she thought transgender women should be able to play competitive sports for women.
Bluder told Dan Zaksheske of OutKick, “My mind is on tomorrow’s game.”
But Bluder said it was a “important issue” that would have to be dealt with “another time.”
Bluder didn’t want to answer this question, which is understandable given that Iowa has a big game this Sunday against South Carolina.
Staley, on the other hand, wasn’t afraid to say what she thought about this touchy subject. She thinks transgender women should be able to compete with women who are biologically female.
“I’m under the opinion of, if you’re a woman you should play,” he said. “If you think of yourself as a woman and want to play sports, or the other way around, you should be able to do so.” That’s what I think. After this, a huge number of people will flood my page and distract me on one of the most important days of our game, but I’m okay with that.
The game between Iowa and South Carolina will start at 3 p.m. ET on ABC.
