Masters called a “joke and an embarrassment” after Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler’s snub causes a stir

People who were watching golf to see Rory McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler, and Xander Schauffele were very angry when they found out that their group wasn’t one of the main groups.

Twenty-two groups from the morning and twenty-two groups from the afternoon make up the first round of the Masters.

One of the most talked-about groups of the morning was Jon Rahm’s with Nick Dunlap and Matt Fitzpatrick, who won the US Open in 2022.

The second one was about Wyndham Clark, Viktor Hovland, and Cameron Smith.

TV cameras follow the main groups through the whole rounds, and there are a few other golf stars sprinkled in there too.

In turn, this means that some well-known groups at big events are often missed.

The group of Scheffler, McIlroy, and Schauffele might have been the most well-known.

The three of them are ranked first, second, and fifth in the Official World Golf Rankings.

Fans were confused when they found out at the start of the first round that they weren’t one of the main groups from the first session.

One viewer yelled at X, “Why aren’t world number one and Masters champion Scottie Scheffler, arguably the most popular golfer in the field Rory McIlroy, and one of the betting favourites Xander Schauffele shown together?” Hi @TheMasters Your name is a joke, and the coverage makes you look bad.

“Criminal to not have Scheffler McIlroy a featured group,” said someone else.

A third said: “Why in the world wouldn’t they put Scheffler, McIlroy and Xander in featured group coverage?”

As a joke, someone else said, “Wait all day to watch McIlroy and Scheffler, and we get Nick Dunlap.”

Someone else said something mean: “Who would want to watch Scheffler, Mcilroy, and Schauffele anyway?” They must not be well-known in the sports world because they are not a featured group today.

Tiger Woods’ group with Jason Day and Max Homa will be one of the groups to watch in the second set of starting times.

Dustin Johnson, Collin Morikawa, and Tommy Fleetwood will be the fourth and last featured group.

All eyes are on McIlroy again this week to see if he can finish the Career Grand Slam.

The 34-year-old has been very close several times in the past few years, and he came in second place in 2022.

For Woods, his business partner at TGL will finally put on the green jacket is a sure thing.

And McIlroy was “flattered” to hear that Woods thought he could win at Augusta.

He said, “That’s nice of you. Nice to hear that from what I think is the best player who has ever played the game.

“Okay, so does that mean it’s going to happen?” Of course not.

The player has been in the game long enough to know that I might be able to do it.

“I know I have what it takes to do it too.” Since the 1990s, I’ve been a pretty good player, so nothing new there.

“So, but, yeah, it’s nice to hear it when it comes out of his mouth.”
