PARIS — Kylian Mbappe’s night got worse when he missed a penalty twice for Paris Saint-Germain against Montpellier, blasted the rebound over the crossbar, and then had to limp off the field with an injury.
The World Cup star left the game in the middle of the first half after grabbing his right leg below the knee after getting hit. As he walked to the dressing room, TV cameras also caught him rubbing the back of his left thigh.
But the coach of PSG, Christophe Galtier, was upbeat.
“Is that a bump? We still don’t know. Galtier said, “It doesn’t look too bad,” after PSG won 3-1 and moved five points ahead at the top of the league. “Don’t worry too much about us.”
In the seventh minute, PSG was given a penalty after a video review showed that central defender Christopher Jullien had pushed Sergio Ramos.
Benjamin Lecomte, the goalkeeper, saved Mbappé’s first shot, and when the referee told him to try again, he made a great save to push Mbappé’s shot onto the right post.
Mbappé missed an easy goal when the ball came back to him after a miss and he shot it high over the crossbar. Mbappé, who scored a hat trick for France in the World Cup final and also scored a penalty in the shootout loss to Argentina, looked shocked after scoring three penalties.
After being challenged, Mbappé sat down and pointed to his leg. He was replaced in the 21st, and even though staff members tried to help, he was able to walk off the field on his own.
Ramos, a veteran central defender, left the game because he was hurt after about 30 minutes.
On Feb. 14, PSG plays Bayern Munich in the first leg of their Champions League round-of-16 match.
