Phil Mickelson takes a quote from a PGA Tour board member to make his case for LIV Golf’s future.

A PGA Tour board member is probably the last person you’d think Phil Mickelson would quote after losing at the 2023 LIV Golf Team Championship, right? That’s exactly what took place at Trump National Doral on Friday.

Mickelson, who was captain of the HyFlyers GC, lost to Brooks Koepka of Smash GC by scores of 6 and 4 in the quarterfinal round of the new circuit’s $50 million finals on Friday. Mickey Mickelson repeated earlier this week’s claim that he “knows” more talented golfers are coming to LIV Golf when asked about it after the round. He used a quote from PGA Tour board member Jimmy Dunne to back up his claim.

A groundbreaking framework agreement between the PGA Tour, the DP World Tour, and Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund—which backs LIV—was being talked about in Congress. Dunne said that if LIV kept getting only five PGA Tour players each year, “in five years, they can gut us.”

While talking about the new players joining his team, Mickelson wouldn’t say their names or how many there might be. He did, however, smile.

“I’m excited about the players coming in next year, and that’s the plan. I love the commitment.” Mickelson told Golfweek after his match, “I love that I’m a part of it.” “I know for sure that’s what will happen, just like Jimmy Dunne said in Congress.”

Last year, similar claims were made about Trump National Doral about a flood of new talent coming in for 2023. Those players included Dean Burmester, Danny Lee, Sebastian Munoz, Thomas Pieters, Mito Pereira, and Brendan Steele, who, with all due respect, don’t really move the needle in LIV’s direction. Michael Mickelson thinks that the basic deal makes it possible for better players to move up to LIV.

Mickelson said earlier this week, “The truth is I’ve been getting calls, as have all of you, from free agents, PGA Tour players, and DP World Tour players who want to come over. The spots are probably going to be filled by the time the qualifying tournament comes around.” “I believe the merger talks make it possible.” I believe it makes room for it, yes.”

The winter trade window starts on Monday, and the LIV expects its 12 teams to have four to six open spots. The league can hold up to 15 teams because of its surprise start style. This means that more people could join. We will wait and see until then.
