The city of Brussels was rocked by riots on Sunday, following Morocco’s 2-0 upset win over Belgium in the World Cup. Police were deployed with water cannons and tear gas to disperse the crowds, and a dozen people were detained. Electric scooters were set on fire, cars overturned and bricks were thrown, and two police officials were injured in Rotterdam.
Mayor Philippe Close urged people to stay away from the city center, and subway and tram traffic had to be interrupted on police orders. He noted that the Moroccan fans were there to celebrate, and the rioters were not fans.
This incident is a stark reminder of the need for tolerance and acceptance in our world. We must strive to cultivate a culture of peace, understanding and respect. We must work to bridge the gaps between communities and cultures and promote acceptance and unity.
