Portugal beat Luxembourg 9-0 at Estadio Algarve on Monday to keep their perfect record in qualifying for Euro 2024. This was their biggest win ever.
Goncalo Inacio, Goncalo Ramos, and Diogo Jota all scored twice, and then Joao Felix scored two minutes before the end to seal the record win. Ricardo Horta also scored, and Bruno Fernandes, who had three helpers, scored as well.
Portugal’s previous record was 8-0, which they did three times, twice against Liechtenstein (1994 and 1999) and once against Kuwait (2003).
Since Roberto Martinez took over in January, Portugal has won all six of its Group J games. They have scored 24 goals and given up none. They have five more points than Slovakia does.
This was Luxembourg’s worst loss ever. They now have 10 points and are in third place, three points behind Slovakia.
