There are three players tied for first place in the Players Championship after the first round. Each one was a surprise. Round 1 at TPC Sawgrass was led by American J.J. Spaun, Lucas Glover, 45, and Camilo Villegas, ranked 254 in the world. All three shot 66s, which is six under par.

In 26 PGA Tour starts last year, Villegas missed 19 cuts and only ended inside the top 40 once. He is the most surprising of the bunch. Recent rounds of golf by Spaun and Glover were good, but Villegas’ 66 was a surprise.

Five players are 5 under par, which puts them behind the leaders. They are Max McGreevy, Rory McIlroy, Billy Horschel, and Min Woo Lee. Eleven golfers, including Aaron Rai and Rickie Fowler, ended with scores of 4 under 68. One of the best golfers in the world, Scottie Scheffler, is tied for first place with Patrick Cantlay and Jake Knapp on 3 under.

Some of the best golfers in the world had a tough start, as they do every year at the tricky TPC Sawgrass. Last place goes to Viktor Hovland, who shot an 8-over 80. Max Homa just got ahead of him with a 7-over 79. Justin Thomas and Matt Fitzpatrick both shot 78s that were 6 over. To make the cut, Sam Burns (+1), Hideki Matsuyama (+2), Tony Finau (+4), and Sungjae Im (+4) will also need good second rounds.

Chandler Phillips’s first round as a player was the most exciting of the day. Phillips had a 4-under 68 in his first round of golf at TPC Sawgrass. He made three birdies and a triple bogey. Justin Ray of The Athletic says Phillips is the first player in the history of the Players Championship to make three eagles in a single round.

It looks like the weather will be great again on Friday, so the second round before the cut should be a lot of fun.
