Rory McIlroy didn’t do much for the media, but Tiger Woods said again that he thinks McIlroy will win the Masters at some point in his career to finish the grand slam.
Around 30 minutes before his planned press conference, McIlroy was the last player to arrive at Augusta National. The world number two answered only seven questions during the early start of the conference.
One of them was in reaction to Woods’ earlier claim that it was only a “matter of time” before McIlroy won all four majors, joining Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus, and Woods himself as the only people to have done so.
McIlroy said, “That’s nice.” “That’s nice to hear from what I think is the best player in video game history.”
Does that mean it’s going to happen? Of course not. But he’s been in the game long enough to know that I have the chance to do it. “I know I have the chance to do it too.” Since the 1990s, I’ve been a pretty good player, so nothing new there. It is nice to hear it when he says it, though.
McIlroy has had nine chances to win the Masters since he won the Open Championship in 2014. His best finish was second in 2022, thanks to an amazing 64 at the end of the round.
McIlroy thinks he has what it takes to win his fifth major title at Augusta National and his first since the 2014 US PGA, even though he missed the cut last year.
McIlroy said, “I feel like I’ve got all the tools to do well this week.” In 2011, he famously had a four-shot lead after 54 holes but then shot an 80 in the last two holes.
But before you get those tools out, I think one of the most important things is to enjoy the process and stop to smell the azaleas along the way.
This is my 16th start in the Masters, so I feel like I’ve done it a lot of different ways. I guess I’m just trying to make what I do every week a little more routine.
I play 25 weeks a year, so I guess there’s no reason to do anything different this week than other weeks.
It was important to me to play a lot before this, either to make sure my game was sharp or, if it wasn’t, to try to get it in the best shape possible.
Last week in Texas, I feel like I made some good progress in that direction.

Each week, I try to play in events on Monday nights or Tuesday mornings. That’s kind of what I’ve done this week.
I played two practice games here at the beginning of the week, so I feel like most of my work on getting ready is already done. Just make sure you’re calm and in the right frame of mind before you go out there.
One thing I’ve tried to learn is not to try to win from the first tee shot. It is a golf event with 72 holes. I won after being 10 strokes behind going into the weekend.
If you make a bogey or get out of place on this golf course, you have to chase things a little more than on other courses. It always makes you want to do something you think you can do. “And I’m pretty sure of my golf game.
There are times when you need to be a little more cautious and patient, but I think I can handle most things.
