Rory McIlroy has said something about Brooks Koepka that is surprising.
McIlroy talked to the media on Wednesday before the Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village Golf Club in Dublin, Ohio. The 34-year-old golfer said he thought Koepka should be on the U.S. Ryder Cup team.
“By all means, I think Brooks should be on the U.S. team. McIlroy said, “I think he’s played well. He’s second in the US standings, and he’s only played two events that count.” “I don’t know if anyone else on the LIV squad is good enough and playing well enough to make the team. But Brooks is a guy who I think definitely deserves to be on the U.S. team.”
McIlroy is very surprised by this kind of view. Last year, he was the loudest critic of LIV and the players who decided to join the PGA Tour rival league. One of the players who joined LIV Golf is Koepka, who just won the PGA Championship.
Even though McIlroy thinks Koepka should be allowed to play in the Ryder Cup, which puts U.S. players against European players, the Northern Ireland native has a different opinion about Team Europe.
McIlroy said, “I have different thoughts about the European team and the other side and how things have turned out, and no, none of those guys should be on the European team.”
The CEO of the PGA of America said that he thought LIV players wouldn’t be able to play in the Ryder Cup in 2021 and 2022. After Henrik Stenson joined LIV, he even lost his job as captain of the European team. So it’s a big deal that McIlroy backs Koepka being on the US team.
McIlroy hasn’t completely changed his mind about LIV golfers, but he isn’t as hard-line against them as he was last year.
