Rory McIlroy is giving a little more thought to what he said about LIV Golf.

The four-time major winner said he was sorry for criticizing players who left the PGA Tour to join the Saudi-backed LIV tour over the past couple of years in an episode of the “Stick to Football” podcast that came out on Wednesday.

“I think, at this point, I was maybe a little judgmental of the guys who went to LIV Golf at the start, and I think it was a bit of a mistake on my part because I now realize that not everyone is in my position or in Tiger Woods’ position,” McIlroy said in the podcast.

It’s true that all professional athletes do it to make a living. That’s something I’ve learned over the last two years. I have no right to judge them for their choice.

“I wouldn’t say I’ve lost the fight against LIV, but I’ve just accepted the fact that this is part of our sport now,” McIlroy stated on the show. “Competition is good for golf as a whole, but the PGA Tour playing against LIV and the Saudis’ money is not manageable.” If you’re going for money, you’ll never win a fight. We’ve seen that happen in other games where people don’t spend as much money as the Saudis.

PGA Tour, LIV Golf, and DP World Tour all announced in June 2023 that they would work together as one organization. This came after years of fighting and threatening each other. The organizations set a deadline of December 31 for the deal to be finished, but it wasn’t done by then. On Sunday, PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan sent players a memo saying that talks would continue after “meaningful progress” had been made.

“I don’t begrudge anyone for going and taking the money and doing something different, but don’t try to burn the place down on your way out,” McIlroy stated. “I think it’s just created this division that will hopefully stop soon because I think it’s the best thing for golf too.”
