It’s not a good idea to question Russell Brand during an interview. We’ve seen plenty of examples in the past, like when Brand was on Real Time with Bill Maher and showed off his incredible wit. The same was true when he had a great talk with Stephen Colbert.
But sometimes interviewers or celebrities are very different when they’re not on camera than when they are. Stephen Colbert said that this was true of Donald Trump, who acted differently when the cameras were rolling. After the interview, Colbert told Trump that he could never come on his show again.
We have reason to believe that Russell Brand did the same thing with Morning Joe, since the celebrity put the whole panel in their place after being treated badly during his interview. As we’ll see in the next section, Brand’s interview was derailed from the start, even before the cameras started rolling.
We’ll talk about how things were different before they went on the air and how fans defended Brand and even praised him for standing up for himself during the interview.
Russell Brand didn’t upset anyone when he walked onto the set. Instead, he was just himself. The famous person said that when he walked into the building, he was nice to everyone. But as soon as he met the soundman, his mood changed right away.
Brand said, “I was surprised by the soundman’s impatience and even more surprised when I was standing just off set, next to the fake newsroom and near the fake researchers who appear on camera as pulsating set dressing and the soundman yapped me to heel with the curt entitlement of Idi Amin’s PA.”
Brand decided to go off on his own and take a walk around the studio to defuse the situation. He talked to fans who were on an NBC studio tour while he was out for a walk.
When Brand sat down in the chair, it was clear that things weren’t going to work out. This was the last good thing that happened to him during the whole experience.
Russell Brand said that his time on Morning Joe with the hosts before going on the air was not the same as it was on the show.
When he sat down in his chair on the CNBC show, Brand knew it would be different, but for all the wrong reasons.
He remembers, “When I landed in my chair, on camera, and was introduced to the show’s hosts—a typical trident of blonde, brunette, and affable chump—it became clear that, despite the show’s stated left-leaning bias, the frequency they were actually broadcasting was the shrill, white noise of dumb current events.”
Brand went on to say that it was common for interviewees to act very differently when the red camera light turns off.
“One thing that surprises me about being on TV a lot is that the “talent” (yuck!) in front of the camera is often very nice when you talk to them normally, but as soon as the red light comes on, they turn into shark-eyed Stepford men who talk in a way that you only hear on TV.
Brand ended up handling the interview like a real pro, and he called out the panel for calling him “he” the whole time, even though he was there in the studio. Fans gave Brand a lot of praise, and people still watch the awkward interview even though it happened years ago.
Fans all thought that Russell Brand did the right thing by yelling at the hosts.
Millions of people have watched the interview, and the comments sections on sites like YouTube are full of praise for Brand and how he handled everything.
Some fans just now found out that the interview happened in 2023.
“Wow, I can’t believe I’m seeing this for the first time in the year 2023. So many things can be learned from this clip. Magnificent, “writes a fan.
“This made me very happy! It was priceless to see one of the most genuinely good people on earth intellectually destroy three media parasites. Well done, Russell, “Writes another fan.
Others noticed that Brand’s mood changed a lot at the beginning.
“Within the first 15 to 20 seconds, Russell’s face changes, and I think that’s when he makes up his mind to kill the show. The challenge was accepted, and it was done.”
In the end, it was a great lesson from Brand that fans really liked.
