After coming into Antwerp, the drugs were stopped before texts that led to Promes’s arrest were read.

It is thought that the cocaine came from Brazil hidden in a package of sea salt.

In January 2020, the two groups of 650 kg and 713 kg arrived in the Netherlands.

The Public Prosecution Service also found another suspect, 32 years old, guilty of bringing the drugs into the country, sending them abroad, moving them, and having them.

Arsenal once wanted to sign Promes, but he now plays for Spartak Moscow. Prosecutors said he thinks he is “untouchable” in Russia because he refused to go back to Holland for the trial.

Since the two countries don’t have an extradition deal, the former Ajax winger didn’t show up and didn’t say anything about the charges against him too.

Authorities wanted to know “how such a successful football player allowed himself to become so involved in crime.” At first, they wanted a nine-year sentence.

They said that Promes “makes the cocaine trade seem normal and almost romantic.”

The court also heard that Promes got extra attention because he was seen as a role model by many people.

Because he stabbed his cousin in the knee at a family party last year, Promes got 18 months in prison.
