According to a multimedia rights agreement announced on Tuesday by NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises and the U.S. Soccer Federation, Telemundo will become the only Spanish-language home for matches involving the U.S. national soccer team.
Following a record-breaking World Cup Qatar 2022 broadcast, Telemundo will now carry all friendly games featuring the men’s and women’s national teams of American soccer. These games will all be streamable on Peacock. In addition, Telemundo receives exclusive rights to live event coverage and the chance to develop supplementary programming.
The 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, and the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which is scheduled to be co-hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States, will all be covered as part of the agreement since Telemundo has the broadcast rights to both the men’s and women’s FIFA World Cups as well as the Olympic Games.
Andres Cantor, a member of the Soccer Hall of Fame, will provide play-by-play coverage while Manuel Sol, a former member of the Mexican National Team, will serve as an analyst. For pre- and post-game coverage, Miguel Gurwitz, Ana Jurka, and Carlota Vizmanos will be in charge.
Building on the momentum of a historic World Cup 2022, NBCUniversal Enterprises Chairman Beau Ferrari said, “We are thrilled to collaborate with the U.S. Soccer Federation and become the new exclusive Spanish-language home of Team USA.” “Our portfolio of premium sports franchises, multiplatform live sports offering, and new IP content production will be built around the U.S. National Teams.
As we prepare for the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2023 and the FIFA Men’s World Cup in the United States, Mexico, and Canada in 2026, we look forward to working together to advance the growth of soccer in the United States and provide for our viewers across all platforms.”
Major events involving the Women’s and Men’s National Soccer Teams, including U.S. games against Mexico, the SheBelieves Cup, and select CONCACAF Nations League matches, will be presented, among other notable matches, among the more than 20 matches per year that will be featured across Telemundo, Universo, and Peacock.
U.S. Soccer Federation President Cindy Parlow Cone stated, “We’re tremendously happy to start our partnership with Telemundo as we continue to convey the passion of our sport and National Teams to Spanish-speaking viewers. “American soccer is in a unique period right now, and Telemundo’s dedication to double down and accelerating the sport’s growth through their unmatched portfolio of platforms provides an incredible foundation for the partnership. Due to Telemundo’s exclusive rights to the FIFA World Cup, FIFA Women’s World Cup, Olympic Games, and Premier League, there will be numerous chances to highlight our teams and players and give viewers unrivalled access to them during momentous occasions.”
The agreement will go into effect in 2023 with the U.S. Women’s international friendlies against New Zealand on Tuesday, Jan. 17, and Friday, Jan. 20, which will air live at 10:05 p. Eastern on Universo and stream on Peacock and the Telemundo app. The partnership will then continue with games featuring the U.S. Men’s team against Serbia and Colombia the following week in Los Angeles. We are excited to work with U.S. Soccer and use our top-notch commentary crew, which is led by Andres Cantor, to further increase Latino support for our National Teams on all screens.
