On Saturday, Gregg Berhalter’s USMNT play a match against Germany in East Hartford, Connecticut. It is a big game because Germany is a four-time World Cup winner.

At Rentschler Field, it will be a big event.

In the summer, Berhalter was put back in charge of the USMNT. In his first two games back in charge last month, the US beat Uzbekistan 3-0 and Oman 4-0 in friendly games. In both games, the US used almost their best starting group.

This friendly match against a fired-up Germany team will be a real test for the young USMNT. Germany’s stars will want to show new manager Julian Nagelsmann what they’re made of after Hansi Flick was fired last month. Nagelsmann will be in charge of Die Mannschaft for the first time, and we can expect a strong response from them.

After losing in the group stage of the 2022 World Cup, Germany has been all over the place for the last 10 months. But Nagelsmann’s hiring marks the start of a new era for the hosts of EURO 2024, and all eyes will be on them going far in that event this summer on home soil.

Think about USMNT

The USMNT has a big chance right now because they have matches against Germany and Ghana. We will get to see how much better this young team is after 10 months since they made it to the round of 16 at the World Cup. The USMNT has mostly played CONCACAF teams in the last 10 months, so we don’t really know where they are. We’ll have a much better idea after these upcoming friendlies, especially since it looks like Berhalter will just pick up where he left off after his contract wasn’t renewed at the end of last year while an investigation into his personal conduct was ongoing. He was then re-hired after his former assistants Anthony Hudson and BJ Callaghan did a great job leading the USMNT to victory in the CONCACAF Nations League and a close call with the Gold Cup final with a weaker team.

Tyler Adams, an important midfielder and captain, is still out because he hurt his hamstring again, which is a big loss. However, Cameron Carter-Vickers and Gio Reyna (he and Berhalter have had good talks since the fallout from the World Cup) are back from injuries, and Kevin Paredes and Kristoffer Lund, two young players, have joined Lennard Maloney. All eyes will be on Christian Pulisic, Tim Weah, Folarin Balogun, and Reyna, the four forwards, to see how well they work together. Without Adams in the middle, Weston McKennie and Yunus Musah, who have both had good starts to their Serie A seasons for Juventus and AC Milan, will have more responsibility.

What the USMNT might play against Germany

Nick Mendola from our site did a deep dive into which players could start for Gregg Berhalter. The biggest questions are on defense, where some regulars have had time to rest and there are a lot of new players vying for a spot at the top of the line.

Think about Germany

Some new players have been called up by Die Mannschaft. Nagelsmann could give Robert Andrich, Chris Fuhrich, and Kevin Behrens their first caps. Aside from that, Germany has a very experienced team. Thomas Muller, Leroy Sane, Ilkay Gundogan, Joshua Kimmich, Antonio Rudiger, Mats Hummels, and Marc Andre ter-Stegen are all likely to play. There are a lot of good players on this Germany team, and you have to believe that Nagelsmann’s (only 36 years old) new energy will help them start over after a rough few years, which was made worse by not having any qualifiers for EURO 2024.
