The quartets are ready for the group stage of the 2024 Copa America. Who will win next summer? There are ten national teams in CONMEBOL, and now there are sixteen top teams from the northern half of the Americas. The competition for the best team in the continent is fierce.
It has never been won by a team from outside of Latin America. In that case, it would be the first time in history that a team from North America, Central America, or the Caribbean won the prize. Also, South American football fans would have a very bad day.
For the 2024 event, Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, and the USA will be in charge of their own groups. If you look at history, these are the two best CONMEBOL and CONCACAF teams. Three of the four groups have teams that have won the World Cup before, and three of them have also won the Copa América more than once.
Round of 16 at the 2024 Copa America
Break up each group and try to guess who will make it to the next round.
Group A
Team (Copa America Titles)
Argentina (15)
Peru (2)
Chile (2)
Canada or Trinidad & Tobago
Argentines won the Copa and the World Cup last year. At the moment, they are also in first place in the CONMBEOL 2026 World Cup group table. There doesn’t seem to be anyone who can topple Messi and his team right now. Chile and Peru have both won the tournament before, but they are both stuck at the bottom of the qualifying ranks. Any one of them could be a dangerous dark horse in the game if they can light a spark. The person who wins the Concacaf playoff and makes it into this group might have a hard time.
Prediction:
1. Argentina
2. Peru
Group B
Team (Copa America Titles)
Mexico
Ecuador
Venezuela
Jamaica
This is the only group that doesn’t have a Cup winner from the past. It is important to note, though, that Mexico is the only non-CONMEBOL team that has ever made it to a final. They’ve come in second place twice and third place three times before. Ecuador and Venezuela are the only teams from South America that have never played in the Copa final. It should be easy for Mexico to get out of group B. From there, it could get tough. I’m putting all my money on this full-on Concacaf homer pick: the Reggae Boyz will join Mexico in the quarterfinals.
Prediction:
1. Mexico
2. Jamaica
Group C
Team (Copa America Titles)
USA
Uruguay (15)
Panama
Bolivia (1)
The United States has competed in four Copa América tournaments so far. Their best finishes were fourth place in 1995 and 2016 (2). A win in the 2022–23 Nations League made the USMNT feel a little more sure of themselves right now. Uruguay has won 15 Copas, which is tied for the most ever, but they haven’t won it since 2011. Still, Panama and Bolivia are most likely going to be the ones left out when the group stage is over. Putting all “U”s together, Uruguay and the USA are in first and second place, with the South Americans in first place because they scored more goals.
Prediction:
1. Uruguay
2. USA
Group D
Team (Copa America Titles)
Brazil (9)
Colombia (1)
Paraguay (2)
Costa Rica or Honduras
Brazil is not having a great time right now. They are sixth in CONMEBOL qualifying, and their star player Neymar is hurt badly and can’t play. But you can’t write off the nine-time Copa winners. Even when they’re not playing well, they have a really good team. A very long time ago, both Colombia and Paraguay were South American champions. Right now, though, Colombia looks like the better team. And while both Costa Rica and Honduras have been tough teams in Concacaf play, they have either not played in the Copa much (Honduras has only done so once, in 2001) or not done very well (Costa Rica has only made it out of the group twice). It’s possible that Group D will finish in the order that was chosen.
Prediction:
1. Brazil
2. Colombia
Spain plays Canada/Trinidad & Tobago in the first game of Copa América 2024 on Thursday, June 20, 2024, in Atlanta. On March 23, 2024, the playoff games to choose the last two teams from Concacaf will take place.
