There is no doubt that the Mexican National Team will be one of the top teams in the Copa América 2024 next summer.
After the new FIFA rankings came out at the end of November, there was talk that El Tri would be picked as the second spot in the group stage. Jaime Lozano’s team fell in the new FIFA rankings, which showed that four teams that will be in the regional competition had passed them: Argentina, Brazil, the United States, and Uruguay.
Why is Mexico the first team picked in the Copa América?
But now we know that Mexico, along with the USMNT, Argentina, and Brazil, will be one of the seeded teams in the draw. This means that Mexico will win Group B in the Copa América.
This comes after they won the Gold Cup by beating Panama in the final, which took place at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood: The game was won by El Tri with a goal in the 87th minute by Santiago Giménez.
The United States will host Copa America 2024
The defending winner of the CONCACAF Gold Cup, which will be chosen through the CONCACAF Nations League 2023–2024, will be the top seed in Group B, according to Article 21 of the CONMEBOL rules for the Copa América 2024.
With this win, Edson Álvarez, Santiago Giménez, and the rest of their team have clinched the top spot in the second group of the event. This ends the rumours that Uruguay was the top seed. Mexico fell two spots in the FIFA rankings, from 12th to 14th, after their loss and win against Honduras. This news came as a pleasant surprise to fans.
When is the draw for the Copa América?
The event draw will happen on 7 December in Miami, which is now the unofficial football capital of the US. Lionel Messi’s arrival has made football much more popular in the city of Miami and across the country. Many other sports events have also been held in and around the Florida city.
It is also known that Jaime Lozano’s team will play at least one South American team in their group. Uruguay, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru are all possible teams in Group B.
