Novak Djokovic beat Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in a Davis Cup match in Valencia on Friday, September 16 by scores of 6-3 and 6-4. This helped Serbia beat Spain in the Group C match. So, Serbia made it to the quarterfinals. On Saturday, they will play the Czech Republic to see who wins their group.
After winning the US Open last week, Djokovic made a good start to his next match. In a match that went about two hours, the Serbian beat the Spaniard because he was stronger.
So, here are three things that stood out about Djokovic’s win over Davidovich:
In the first set, Davidovich Fokina tried to beat Djokovic by being stronger.
In the first set, Davidovich Fokina hit his groundstrokes hard to put pressure on Djokovic. But because the Serb was so good at defence, he rarely got through.
When the Spaniard tried to overpress, he hit the ball out of the court a few times. In the end, it helped Djokovic because the Serb stayed as cool as ever.
Djokovic stuck to what he did best.
In the first set, Djokovic and Davidovich Fokina went back and forth with backhands across the court, and then Djokovic fired a few times down the line. So, the Serb played to his strengths, which put pressure on the Spaniard.
Davidovich Fokina also hit a few drop shots, but Djokovic was up to the challenge by getting to the ball in time and then using his own crosscourt backhand cuts. In the eighth game of the first set, the 36-year-old broke Davidovich Fokina before going on to win the set and get the first point.

Davidovich Fokina was better in the second set, but Djokovic stayed strong.
In the second set, Davidovich Fokina was more careful with his shots, which led to fewer mistakes and made Djokovic make more. He broke the 24-time Grand Slam winner once to take a 4-1 lead in the set and look like he could force a third set.
But as the second set went on, Djokovic began to go around his backhand more often. He hit a lot of strong inside-out and inside-in forehands to put pressure on Davidovich Fokina and get back into the match. He won the set and the match by winning five games in a row.
