It was very hard for the Belarusian to beat Aryna Sabalenka after she won the Australian Open last year.
Sabalenka was the queen of double faults in 2022, and by the end of that year, she thought she would never make it past the semifinals at a grand slam again.
But in 2023, she ruled Melbourne and won the Australian Open. That same year, she also made it to the final of the US Open and was ranked number one in the world.
Now that she is ranked No. 2, she wants to protect her title and stop Iga Swiatek from winning her first Australian Open title.
After winning the WTA Tour Finals, Swiatek took back the No. 1 title from Sabalenka. However, they are not the only ones trying to win at the Australian Open.
Ten women have won this event before Sabalenka. Naomi Osaka, Sofia Kenin, Caroline Wozniacki, Angelique Kerber, and Victoria Azarenka are the other five. Elena Rybakina and Coco Gauff are also in the running.
It looks like the first major of 2024 will be very exciting…
