The Copa América 2024 doesn’t start for another six months. The event will start on June 20 and feature ten teams from Conmebol and six teams from Concacaf. It will be held in the United States. The group stage draw will take place this Thursday evening in Miami, one of the host cities for the tournament. People are getting more and more excited about the event.
Two countries have not yet been announced to play. The last two teams to qualify are from the CONCACAF playoffs, with Honduras playing Costa Rica and Canada playing Trinidad and Tobago.
During the group stage, the 16 teams will be split into 4 zones, with the top two teams from each zone moving on to the semifinals.
The Copa América pots
Conmebol promised the pots for the first phase draw a few days ago. Columbia’s national team will be in Pot 2, along with Ecuador, Peru, Uruguay, and Ecuador. Pot 1 has the top four seeds: Argentina (current winner), Mexico, the USA, and Brazil.
POT 1: Argentina (in Group A), Mexico (in Group B), the US (in Group C), and Brazil (in Group D).
Pot 2: Uruguay, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru make up Pot 2.
POT 3: Paraguay, Chile, Panama, and Venezuela
Pot 4: Jamaica, Bolivia, Canada/Trinidad and Tobago, and Honduras/Costa Rica are in Pot 4.
Colombia could have a group of people who die
Because they are in Pot 2, Colombia will not play Uruguay, Ecuador, or Peru in the group stage.
Argentina, winner of the World Cup, or the always dangerous Brazil could be up against Néstor Lorenzo’s team. Both of these teams are expected to go all the way in the tournament, as each group can only have three Conmebol teams.
So, Colombia could be put in a group with Argentina, Venezuela, and Canada (if they qualify). This would be a tough test for them.
Argentina is the favorite to win.
After winning the World Cup in Qatar and getting off to a good start in the South American 2026 World Cup qualifiers, the Albiceleste will be heavy favorites going into the 2024 event. The Vinotinto are one of the dark horses in the game. They are currently in fourth place in their World Cup qualifying group, behind Canada, which is likely the strongest CONCACAF team in Pot 4 if Les Rouges win their playoff.
This Thursday, December 7, 2024, at the James L. Knight Center in Miami, Florida, the draw for the Copa América 2024 group stage will take place.
