Jon Rahm wants to do something that hasn’t been done by a golfer since Tiger Woods was at his best.

The Spaniard has won his first two tournaments of the year, and he is trying to become the first player since Tiger Woods in 2008 to win his first three tournaments of the year.

The No. 3 golfer in the world has won the Sentry Tournament of Champions and The American Express back-to-back. Since last year, he has won four of his last six tournaments and placed in the top 10 in seven straight tournaments. Even though there are a lot of strong players in the Farmers Insurance, Rahm is the clear favourite. Because of what he did at Torrey Pines in the past, the rest of the tour that was waiting for him to cool down may have to wait longer.

Rahm won the US Open in 2021 on this same course, and he almost won it again last year. He tied for third and was only one stroke away from a playoff. Rahm won his first PGA Tour tournament in 2017 at this event. On the last hole, he made a 60-foot eagle putt, and he has finished in the top 10 in six of the seven tournaments he has played at the famous San Diego course.

Also on the line? A move back up to No. 1 in the world, though Rory McIlroy’s return this week in Dubai makes things harder if they both win.

Here are all of Rahm’s possible futures.

Of course, Rahm’s Tiger-like hunt won’t be easy for a hungry field to fall for.

At Torrey Pines, big names like Justin Thomas, Xander Schauffele, Will Zalatoris, Collin Morikawa, Tony Finau, Max Homa, and last year’s winner Luke List will be teeing off. Here are all of the first two rounds’ pairings and tee times.

The first round starts on Wednesday, because the PGA Tour doesn’t want to compete on Sunday, when the NFL conference championship games are. Players will start at different times on the first and tenth holes, and they will also play the first two rounds on the North Course and South Course at Torrey Pines. Each player will play one round at each course, and the last two rounds will be played on the South Course.

(Note: An asterisk next to a tee time means the group will start on the 10th hole. All times are in eastern standard time and in the evening.)

Wednesday is the first round.

Past winners from Farmer’s Insurance

As was already said, Rahm won this event in 2017 in a dramatic way. He wants to join Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Jason Day, Brandt Snedeker, Steve Pate, Tom Watson, J.C. Snead, Arnold Palmer, and Tommy Bolt as the 10th player to win this tournament twice.

Since 1998, here are the last 25 winners.
