This is the third rule. One of the best wedge players in the world plays
This is the 1/3rd rule.

You have to practice wedge shots if you want to get good at them. You should generally have more, but the good news is that it’s not an all-or-nothing case. Making small improvements to your wedges is as easy as changing how much time you spend on the range. Poston does most of his wedge work during his warmups.

“If I’m hitting balls for an hour, I probably spend 20 to 25 minutes hitting wedge shots up to 130 yards,” Poston shares. “This is a lot of what I do to warm up.” This helps with speed and impact, he says. “You’ll start developing a great feel for it.”

There you have it: the “one-third rule.” It’s a good guide for the rest of us: Twenty minutes on an hour is the same as one-third of your range practice. For every 30 minutes at the range, you would hit wedge shots for 10 minutes. For a 15-minute warm up, you hit the wedge for five minutes. As you do it, it will seem like a very long time, but it will be worth it. So the next time you go to the range to warm up, shoot shots from about 130 yards away for a third of the time.

A lot of little holes

That’s right, you spend a third of your time on the range hitting wedge shots. That’s great! But don’t make the mistake of hitting a lot of shots from, say, 50 yards, 100 yards, and so on.

Instead, make your distances as different as you can. For me, this kind of random practice has been very helpful. Start with a few short shots, then a few that are a little longer, then a few that are even longer, and so on. The windows need to be close together and tight.

“Everything I do is within five yards,” Poston says. “65 yards, 60 yards, 75 yards, 80 yards…”At this point, I can pretty much do a good job in every little spot.

You can hit wedge shots in a lot of different ways. Some players are so accurate that they measure their backswing by the inch to change how far they hit the ball. A new path is chosen and suggested by Poston. Getting your feel right by using the two ways above. It will take some time, but after a while it will be easy. When it does, you’ll be sure that you will last.

“You’ll start developing a great feel for it,” he shares. “And there will be no question when you do. Don’t second-guess.”
