Nike may not be making Tiger Woods any more clothes in 2024. The famous golfer’s marketing deal with the company, which has been going on for almost 30 years, may be ending.
The “No Laying Up” show was the first to talk about a possible breakup. According to the podcast, Nike may be thinking about ending its relationships with a number of golfers (Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler are also Nike endorsers) because the Beaverton-based clothing and shoe giant is thinking about shutting down its golf business.
“I’ve heard that the PNC is his last tournament with Nike,” Tron Carter, a co-host, said. “Let’s see what takes place there.” I also heard the same things from other Nike players.
When asked about the possible end of his relationship with Nike, Woods didn’t say much. Over the weekend, he played in the PNC Championship with his son Charlie as his caddie and his daughter Samantha as his caddy.
Woods answered, “I’m still wearing their stuff.”
“Is this the end of it coming up?” asked another interviewer.
Woods said again, “I’m still wearing their product.”
People looked at Woods funny when he wore FootJoy shoes to the Masters in 2022, a little more than a year after the terrible car accident in February 2021 that broke and almost killed him on the right leg. The shoes caused a stir in the golf world, but Nike spoke out in support of Woods.
Nike said in a statement, “Like golf fans all over the world, we are thrilled to see Tiger back on the course.” “He is a great athlete, and it’s amazing to see him back in the game at this level.” His story still goes beyond sports and motivates all of us. His return will go on, and we will work with him to meet his new needs.
Because Nike stopped making golf gear in 2016, Woods moved to TaylorMade clubs. There have been reports that TaylorMade wants to make more clothes in 2024, and Woods might join the company.
One of the best marketing deals in sports history will end if Woods and Nike break up.
After winning his third straight U.S. Amateur title, Woods signed his first deal with Nike in 1996. The deal was allegedly worth $40 million over five years. In 2001, he signed a new deal with Nike worth $100 million over five years. Woods’ next deal was said to be for eight years and pay him up to $40 million a year. Last year, Woods signed a new deal that is said to be worth about $200 million over 10 years.
Since Woods’s deal with Nike was up at the end of the year, he didn’t say much about his future with the company. We will see if Woods wears the Swoosh in 2024.
