Tom Cruise has been linked to many scripts over the course of his career. He was almost in The Notebook with Britney Spears, for example. We’ll show you in the next section that Cruise was also up for other roles, including Johnny Depp’s part in Edward Scissorhands.

In the next section, we’ll look at the roles Tom Cruise was considered for and the biggest project he ended up turning down. Cruise was supposed to play this role in the MCU, but it didn’t work out. We’re going to tell you what happened backstage and who got the part instead. Things seem to have gone the way they should have.
It wasn’t the only big project that Tom Cruise turned down
Tom Cruise has had to say no to many great scripts over the course of his career. Either he didn’t like their ideas or they didn’t fit into his schedule. The Shawshank Redemption, Footloose, and A Beautiful Mind are some of the movies on the list.

Cruise was also considered for the role of Edward Scissorhands, but it seems like he might have asked a few too many creative questions for the role.
Caroline Thompson, who wrote the screenplay, talked about how she and Cruise worked together.
“(Cruise) wanted to know how Edward went to the bathroom,” says Thompson. “He was asking the kind of questions about the character that can’t be asked of this character!”
“Part of what made the story so delicate was that it didn’t answer questions like “How does he go to the bathroom?” How did he live for so long without eating?’ Tom Cruise wouldn’t have been in the movie if those questions hadn’t been answered.
It wouldn’t be the last time Cruise turned down a big project. He turned down a major role in the MCU, which may have been the biggest mistake of his career.
The role of Iron Man was offered to Tom Cruise, but he turned it down because it didn’t feel right. Creatively
Iron Man turned into a very bad thing for the MCU. The first movie made $585 million at the box office. The second movie made $629 million, and the third movie made $1.2 billion.
Cruise could have been a big part of this kind of money, but he chose not to. Here’s why Cruise didn’t want to play the part:
“Marvel Studios came to me at a certain time, and I want to do things right when I do them. If I say yes to something, I have to be sure it’s going to be something special. And as it was lining up, it just didn’t feel to me like it was going to work. I need to be able to make decisions and make the movie as good as it can be. It just didn’t work out that way.”

In the years that followed, Cruise never said he was sorry he didn’t take the part. Instead, he said that Robert Downey Jr. was the best choice.
“I really like Robert Downey, Jr. I can’t think of anyone else who would be good in this part, and I think it’s a great fit for him.”
Cruise also wouldn’t shut the door on the MCU. He said that it all depends on what he sees.
“When I watch a movie, I think, “You know, I don’t rule out anything. What’s the story?” Who is the person? Does it interest me? Do I think this is something people would want to watch me do? What can I find out? What do I have to offer? That’s how I really see things.”
The role made Robert Downey Jr.’s career better, but it wasn’t easy for the directors to cast him
The role was given to Robert Downey Jr., but it was Marvel’s biggest risk ever.
Kevin Feige said that the armour that Robert Downey Jr. wore in Iron Man was the biggest risk that Marvel ever took. But the MCU wouldn’t be the same without Downey Jr.
“We planned to make a movie about Iron Man. I still think that putting Robert Downey Jr. in the role was the biggest risk, which seems crazy to say now. It was both the biggest risk and the most important part of starting the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We wouldn’t be sitting here today if it weren’t for Robert. I really think so.”
Since Robert Downey Jr. wasn’t an action star or a big draw, it was nerve-wracking for the people working behind the scenes. But when the movie came out, those doubts were put to rest.
“He was a wonderful actor. Everyone agreed that he was a great actor. But he had never been a movie star. He wasn’t necessarily a big name. And we quickly saw that not casting him was the risk, which I’ve said before. And Jon Favreau really did see Robert in that role and in that movie. I think that decision, and the fact that it worked, gave us the freedom to take more risks and make more choices “Feige told Cinema Blend about it.
